Athletic Eligibility Eligibility to Participate in High School Sports Incoming ninth grade student-athletes must be regularly promoted (not administratively placed) to be eligible to compete in any and all fall sports during their ninth grade year at Forest High School. Once enrolled at the high school, the student must have a 2.0 GPA at the semester in order to continue to play sports or to compete in a spring sport. The cumulative GPA will determine eligibility for the following school year; again a student must have a 2.0 GPA or higher in order to play sports the first semester of the next school year. Eligibility to Participate in College Sports Students who want to participate in Division I or Division II sports should start the certification process early, usually by the end of their junior year. Many college sports are regulated by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), an organization founded in 1906 that has established rules on eligibility, recruiting, and financial aid. The NCAA has three membership divisions – Division I, Division II, and Division III. Institutions are members of one of the divisions based on the size and scope of their athletic programs and whether they provide athletic scholarships.
