Honors, Advanced Placement, and Dual Enrollment

Honors and AP courses are offered to selected students in preparation for a college education.  Criteria used in the selection of students for these programs include evidence of strong academic motivation, high GPA and FCAT scores, essays, and administration/teacher recommendation.  A Central Florida Community College Dual Enrollment program is also available to meet the needs of selected seniors who meet program requirements and wish to begin earning college credit.  A carefully planned program of study that stresses advanced courses assists students in competing for a variety of scholarships and awards such as the following:

  • Academically advanced students have the opportunity to participate in the FHS honors program. Because of the extra challenge involved, these courses earn weighted grade points (A=5.0, B=4.0, C=3.0).

  • Advanced Placement is a program of college-level courses and exams for advanced students. Classes are offered based on student enrollment. Upon successful completion of an AP course, students may earn college credit based on the student's score on a national exam and college policy.

State Board of Education Rule 6A-10.0241 authorizes community colleges and district school boards to conduct dual enrollment classes. These classes, taught on college campuses, afford qualified high school students the opportunity to obtain both high school and college credit. Students must be juniors or seniors with an unweighted cumulative GPA of 3.0 and one of the following test scores:

  • SAT -- Verbal 440, Math 440
  • ACT -- Reading 18, English 17, Math 19
  • CPT -- Reading Comp 83, Sent SK. 83, Elem. Alg 72

Weighted Courses In The Determination Of Grade Point Averages
All Honors, Advanced Placement, Dual Enrollment courses, specified Career & Technical courses, designated by the Department of Education Course Code Directory, are weighted, and receive an additional 1.0 quality point value. In order to receive additional weighting, students must receive a “C” or better in the course.
