World Languages Elective Courses

World Language students have the opportunity to join the Spanish, Latin, and/or French clubs to further their learning experience.  After taking 3 semesters of Spanish or French, if they meet the criteria and are recommended by their teacher, students may also join the Spanish or French Honor Society.

  • French I (0701320)
    Grades 9-11

    This course focuses on vocabulary, conversational practice, verb tenses, and idiomatic expressions. Reading and writing are introduced.

  • French II (0701330)
    Grades 10-12; French I required.

    This course focuses on vocabulary, conversational practice, verb tenses, and idiomatic expressions. More advanced reading and writing are covered.

  • French III Honors (0701340)
    Grades 10-12; French II and Teacher recommendation required.

    This course focuses on vocabulary, conversational practice, writing, and verb tenses. Includes idiomatic expressions and some translation of literature.

  • French IV Honors (0701350)
    Grade 11-12; French III and Teacher recommendation required.

    This course focuses on reading and comprehension of French literature, including poetry. Advanced grammar and vocabulary are introduced.

  • Latin I (0706300)
    Grades 9-11

    This course includes the study of vocabulary, grammar, Latin roots, and English derivatives; Latin readings to develop an understanding of Roman civilization and culture. Reading selections in mythology, Roman history, and culture are included.

  • Latin II (0706310)
    Grades 10-12; Latin I required.

    This course includes the study of vocabulary, grammar, Latin roots, and English derivatives; Latin readings to develop an understanding of Roman civilization and culture. Reading selections in mythology, Roman history, and culture are included.

  • Latin III Honors (0706320)
    Grades 10-12; Latin II and Teacher recommendation required.

    This course includes the study of vocabulary, grammar, Latin roots, English derivatives and Roman culture; Latin readings from original authors to develop an understanding of Latin literature.

  • Latin IV Honors (0706330)
    Grade 11-12; Latin III and Teacher recommendation required.

    This course requires students to read, understand, analyze, and interpret the writings of Virgil or other famous authors of Latin literature. Readings in Roman culture are included.

  • Spanish for Spanish Speakers I (0709300)

    Grades 9-12; Teacher recommendation required

    The purpose of this course is to enable students whose heritage language is Spanish to develop, maintain, and enhance proficiency in their home language by reinforcing and acquiring skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing, including the fundamentals of Spanish grammar. The course content will reflect the cultural values of Spanish language and societies. The course will enable students to gain a better understanding of the nature of their own language as well as other languages to be acquired.

    This course includes Spanish vocabulary, grammar, conversation, reading, and writing, while introducing skills of speaking, reading, and writing. Emphasis is on the communicative skills of listening, writing, and speaking. An introduction to the culture and literature of Spain and other Spanish speaking countries is included.

    Grades 10-12; Spanish I required.

    This course includes Spanish vocabulary, grammar, conversation, reading, and writing. There is a focus on enhancing the skills of speaking, reading, and writing, while continuing to emphasize the communicative skills of listening, reading, writing, and speaking. Exposure to the culture and literature of Spain and other Spanish speaking countries is also included. After taking three semesters of Spanish and if they meet the criteria and are recommended by their Spanish teacher, students may also join the Spanish Honor Society.

    Grades 10-12; Spanish II and Teacher recommendation required.

    This course is a continued study of vocabulary and grammar within the communicative skills, with an emphasis on speaking and writing.

  • Spanish IV Honors (0708370)
    Grade 11-12; Spanish III and Teacher recommendation required

    This course is a study of advanced grammar and composition in a conversational approach in preparation for AP courses.

  • AP Spanish Language (0708400)
    Grade 11-12; Spanish IV and/or Teacher recommendation required.

    An AP Spanish Language course is comparable to an advanced level (5th and 6th semester or the equivalent) college Spanish language course. Emphasizing the use of Spanish for active communication, it encompasses aural/oral skills, reading comprehension, grammar, and composition.
